There are many different pieces of EQ hardware out there, but not all of them are created equally. The A Designs Hammer is a great stereo/dual mono EQ that is actually one of the easiest EQs to use, and it’s very intuitive. All you have to do is find the frequency you want to boost or cut and then do so until it sounds just like you want it to.
The Hammer features an EQ for the two bus, which is somewhat unusual. However, it is actually a great tool to use in shaping how your mix is perceived. You can easily use it to add or reduce gain. The bus also brings a bit of analog warmth into the mix, something missing from a lot of lower-end EQs. It's a great to avoid that harsh sound that you get from some digital mixes. However, while the Hammer does use tubes, you won’t find that it over-saturates your mixes or replace detail with warmth.
By using the Hammer’s master bus, you’ll be able to really glue your mix together since all tracks will have been done using the same piece of gear. This creates a consistent signature that makes your mix more cohesive. While you can always run compression and EQ on your master bus, you don’t necessarily have to. Hammer is so easy to use for a master bus that you’ll forget about every other more frustrating piece of equipment out there.
Overall, while A Designs Hammer may not have as many bells and whistles as some other EQs out there, the fact that it’s so easy to use more than makes up for this. The two bus EQ is different, too, and lets you really create a cohesive sound.
