The Focusrite ISA One Mic Preamp is a high quality mic/instrument preamp with a number of great features. It takes the design of the Focusrite ISA 110 and the Forte studio console, merges them together, and improves them. This zero-latency cue system has a number of stereo cue facilities, variable input impedance circuitry, and has a nice range of mic gain settings.
You’ll find inputs for XLR and TRS mic and line level inputs, a DI instrument input, and an EXT I/P connection. The main input has a switch that changes between line and mic. The main also features switchable mic impedance, switchable highpass filter, phase flip, and an I/O jack for an outboard processor. The cue system can be set to a stereo feed plugged int to one of the rear input jacks and an input from the main section. If you want zero latency, just feed a mono mix into the EXI I/P jack instead of using the main input instrument section.
Using the ISA One is exactly like using the ISA 110 with the one exception: it’s easier to adjust gain on the fly with the ISA One thanks to its fine gain control. It’s also quieter and features a more dynamic range than the 110. However, when in use, you may find yourself wishing that it were possible to mute the channels individually.
The ISA One is fairly small and is sloped down so it’s easy to use every knob and button. The push buttons are backlit for visibility, and the meter is large and lighted as well. It provides good sound for your pre-amp and for the A/D converter. The ISA One works well with both high-end equipment and with small, portable consoles. All in all, it’s a good buy at $799.
