CharterOak acoustics makes some amazing sounding modern microphones with a vintage vibe. Below is q quick overview of three of their more popular models. Each is covered in a demo / review video at the bottom of this post.
The CharterOak M900T is an all tube small-diaphragm mic with 3 interchangeable capsules. The mic is built in the US with parts sourced internationally as well as domestically. It features a hyper-candioid capsule. The M900t is a fairly detailed mic, but leans toward a softer (less harsh) sound. In fact, it sounds somewhat like a vintage-style tube pencil. The midrange is rich and pretty concentrated, with a lot of harmonics and a smooth top-end.
The CharterOak S600 is a large diaphragm tube-mic. It’s somewhat unusual in that it has an almost ribbon mic-like frequency response while not having any of the issues ribbons often have. It captures a very musical sound, and unlike ribbons, it can handle high SPLs. It’s great for tracking drum overheads, especially if you don’t have a really high ceiling. Harsh cymbals can be toned down a bit with this mic. The character of sound they capture is easy to spot, and they’re a great mic if you’re having issues recording an acoustic guitar or what something a little different.
Finally, the CharterOak E700 is a large mic with a big diaphragm. Its unique point is that it handles the low ends in a very different kind of way. It features great off-axis rejection and really brings out the full, deep sound of the drums. You’ll almost think you’re listening to a fully processed sound.
